Particula Group is attending the Kick-off meeting of the Be-Up project in Valencia, which officially started on May 1, 2025.
Be-UP project aims to develop, demonstrate and scale-up advanced biodegradable polymers for packaging materials, which will also be recyclable, to enhance the replacement of conventional plastics, like PE, PP and PET, while showing an improved sustainability (Reduction of ≥ 25% GHG emissions) and safety profile. New synthesis and processing routes will be developed, supported by digital tools and advanced techniques (Advanced physical and chemical blending; Inline Rheology/Dispersion Control; Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning modelling tools) aiming to achieve higher cost-efficiency (Improvements in process performance defined in terms of multi-objective function evaluation ≥ 25%3) based on a holistic concept, starting from the polymerization, the formulation and converting of the materials and the evaluation of End-of-life (EoL) scenarios. Techno-economic and sustainability feasibility, biodegradability (encompassing lab and open environments), recyclability and safety will be assessed. The data and conclusions of these assessments will be useful not only for validation by packaging companies, but also for: i) the development of strategies and modelling for the production of new improved materials fully adapted to different packaging applications and EoL scenarios; ii) enhanced sustainability of packaging materials with economic benefits (proofed by solid business models); iii) improving the standardization of tests and labelling of materials and packaging products. Be-UP is expected to enhance the substitution of 67,798
tons in 2032 of non-biodegradable plastics and reduce 101,697 CO2 eq tons.
